Decision Day

        My initial impressions of InDesign and Primer Pro after participating in the class tutorials is that there is a variety of things you can do on these programs. There are so many ways you can create videos, edit pictures, and be creative in InDesign and Premier Pro. Both programs can help in a huge way of showing my story. This is because there are so many things you can do to make your story more interesting and even show off whatever emotions you are trying to convey. 

      To start off, "Premier Pro" , although not great for making and editing pictures it is great for creating and editing films/videos. In the article, ”Our Place in the Universe: The Importance of Story and Storytelling in the Classroom," the author states, “Technology supports a wealth of storytelling options" and that they "have evolved from tales told around fires and in mead halls to dynamic multimedia events" (Wayne R. Cherry 2017).  He also warns that "This change, however, does not and should not lessen the impact and importance of the stories we tell." This shows that telling a story can have a big impact on someone depending on the way you present it. For example, in “Premier Pro” you can change how fast the video plays, add music behind different scenes, etc. You can even add certain filters to the clips to make them look old, happy, sad, new, and many other emotions and looks.

        On the other hand, “InDesign” is great for editing and designing pictures, and layouts, more than it is for videos. This is because in InDesign there are a many ways you can make your pictures and articles enjoyable to read and eye catching and this is needed especially now a days because many people don't buy articles or magazines anymore, the better it looks, the more likely someone will pick it up. The author Joey Franklin of the article, “Survival of the fittest: four editors on the future of literary magazines" states, “ Admittedly, there are lots of factors here: Maybe the department secretaries and program directors we've been corresponding with haven't really helped get the word out; maybe the kids are subscribing to tons of other magazines already; maybe people just don't like our magazine. Or maybe Speer is right: Writers are just bad subscribers. So yes, the key is not to depend on them--to reach out to a wider audience, or to find creative ways to attract funding. It's a constant challenge." (2011)This shows that it is very important for magazine writers to make sure that the magazines are appealing, and interesting to attract buyers. Even writers themselves aren't interested in buying magazines, which needs to be solved. "InDesign" is great when making and designing magazines because you are able to easily edit and move around pictures, text, and formatting to make it original to what you want and eye catching. "InDesign" will be great for me to use, to tell my story in an entertaining way because the possibilities are endless for representation and being creative. 

        You can also get a reader's attention by having a good story that shows off an emotion and has a big impact on the reader. The author Joey Franklin states, “Stories have power, and the stories we tell today do just as much to try to explain our world as did the myths of so long ago” (2011). This reemphasizes that magazines can have a great deal of impact on others. They are able to show people information, whether it be current or not  and teach people about new things, cultures, news, politics, life styles and so much more that can really impact  the views and lives of readers. With " InDesign" I am able to express my creativity and express different emotions on these different topics. The more wide spread and impactful your magazine is the more people you will affect, getting more readers.

        All of this research on "InDesign" and "Premier Pro" and the art and history or storytelling has made me come to the conclusion that for my portfolio project I am going to be doing a magazine. This is because I think it will be fun to tell my story in a creative way and express the topics I'm interested in with others. I believe "InDesign" will allow me to do this to the full extent. Plus I can use the different skills I've learned when reviewing other peoples magazines and use them to transform mine. I am also not very tech savvy and I found Premier Pro to be a lot more challenging to navigate, then "InDesign" ( from watching how to video's, and practicing in the program) , so I think I will be better at working in InDesign, creating a great magazine!
